AITA for not giving my grandson another grandchild's birthday present as a prize?

I just finished my years-long project of restoring an old arcade machine in my garage, and last weekend my grandchildren "Boris" (aged 11) and "Doris" (aged 8) came over
  • 03
and wanted to play on the machine. We had fun together taking turns and Boris eventually set a substantial high score, and then he told
  • 04
me he wanted to take a toy as a prize as he pointed towards the giant stuffed animal I had purchased for "Moris" (another grandson who has different parents than Boris and Doris)'s
  • 05
6th birthday. I explained to him that he can't have the stuffed animal as it's for Moris's birthday, but he insisted that since he won he deserved a
  • 06
prize. I explained that this arcade machine doesn't give out prizes like in an actual arcade but my words fell on deaf ears as Boris ran towards the stuffed animal.
  • 07
I asked "Bessy" (Boris's mother, my daughter) if she could tell Boris that he can't have the stuffed animal, but instead of doing anything, she suggested
  • 08
that I let Boris have this stuffed animal and get a different stuffed animal for Moris. I told Bessy this would not happenmas the only available giant stuffed animals here are very expensive.
  • 09
I ended up having to ban Boris from the garage until he learnt to respect other people's belongings, but this made him very upset and now Bessy is also cross with me for treating
  • 10
Boris unfairly. I thought this matter would resolve itself quickly but Bessy is still cross with me and seems to still have some expectation I procure a stuffed animal for Boris.

Jealous-Ad8487 Eleven is old enough to understand the word no. At that age he should already know he isn't going to get everything that he wants. Let them be cross with you. You said no,
  • 13
gave a valid excuse and they both persisted in demanding something that is not theirs and isn't meant to be theirs. NTA. Might be time to reflect on why he behaves like this.
  • 14
And has your daughter always been so flippant? Did she always have such an entitled attitide?
  • 15
Enough Foundation280 OP She's only been like this since her husband d of ca r a few months ago. I'm trying to be forgiving of her parenting mishaps since she's going through a rough time.

Zealousideal_Radio80 NTA. At 11, a child is developmentally able to understand when something is not meant for them. They should also be able to understand that winning a game does not always come with prizes. Bessy is doing Boris a disservice by not reinforcing this concept.

Capable-Art-1972 ΝΤΑ You need to give Bessy a reminder that an 11 year old should not be treated like a toddler
  • 18
Visual-Lobster6625 NTA - the "prize" is bragging rights, Boris doesn't deserve a physical prize for winning. His mother can buy him something if she wants him to have a prize for winning.
  • 19
Lucy_Nell NTA. Bessy is raising an entitled child.

StarshineSoul NTA. This is an example of a parent that result in an entitled adult. Saying no isn't going to hurt the kid and you don't owe him a prize just because he wants one.
